When most people saw Anton, they did not think "scientist". Six feet tall, lightly tanned skin, well groomed brown hair, and an athletic frame, he looked more like a clothing model than someone who spent his whole day in a lab. However, the cold, scientific look in his cold blue eyes and the stainless white lab coat he wore over a black suit matched his profession, and personality, perfectly.
But that was exactly Anton's job. Not just that, his calling. Everything he did, every step he took in life, had led him to this point, on Titan, a moon supposedly not yet terraformed.
Anton walked down a corridor of blue-polished metal and ceramic and input a quick passkey into a panel by a vault-like door. Then he removed his glasses and met the retinal scan. Finally, the scientist closed his eyes and let the scanner take a quick scan of his brain patterns. When it was convinced that he was, in fact, the head researcher, the door slid open.
He stepped into a room full of computers, observational equipment, instruments, and many less obvious devices. One of the walls was made of a darkened, one-way glass and was currently looking into the room next door. The lights in neighboring room were off, but Anton could see a pair of glowing, purple lights snap to him as he entered.
The only other person in the monitoring room was a soldier in a UE uniform, the symbol of a coiled black snake on a patch on his upper arm. The soldier nodded to the scientist and said, "Hey Doctor L."
"How is the subject doing?" Anton asked, turning to the purple, glowing eyes, staring at him from the shadows.
"Fine. She just woke up a second ago. Probably felt you get here." The soldier replied.
"Hello Daddy." Came a young, feminine voice from the other room. Anton ignored it.
"She shouldn't be able to feel through the chamber, but she has been getting stronger." The scientist sighed. "Looks like we'll have to reinforce it again. Oh well, Project Savage could use another complete physical, especially if she's improved that much."
"Why don't you come play with me, Daddy?" The female voice said mockingly. "It's lonely in here. Come play." Something hit the window very, very hard. Hard enough to make the whole room shudder.
"...yes, we definitely need to reinforce that room." Anton said dispassionately. "Miller, flood the room with tranq gas."
"Yes, sir!" The soldier replied, and hit a switch. Though the other room was dark, silvery gas relfected purple off Project Savage's glowing eyes. The female voice coughed, the eyes closed, and the sound of something small slumping to the ground could be heard.
The guard moved to the door, but Anton stopped him. "Wait." The scientist warned. "She's faking it."
Miller gave him a quizzical look. "But that was the standard dose. I don't understand how she could still be up."
"Her physical powers seem to be growing as well. Give her a triple concentration dose of the gas." Anton said calculatingly.
Miller balked. "But, sir. That could kill her."
"It won't."
"But if she dies..." Miller began. Anton shot him a dark look.
"If she dies we make another one. And if you don't do this, then it will be your team that gets to field test her progress. Am I understood?" The scientist replied coldly.
Miller started to say, "But she's your daughter for..."
Anton interrupted him. "That was not an idle threat. Triple concentration now."
The soldier started to respond, then cast his eyes down and set about putting even more gas into the chamber. Project Savage was quick to respond, and the purple eyes were suddenly at the window, a fist pounding at the obscured glass, a slim figure almost able to be seen through the darkness and the mist. The figure's hand began to glow with fire when, all of a sudden, she slumped against the glass and toppled to the floor, the flame fading quickly.
"She's out. Get her to the examination room. Put twice as many bonds on her and double their strength." Anton ordered. Miller did as he was told, wisely too. He knew what happened when Anton was crossed. And it was very seldom pretty.
