In the year 12 A.E. (After Exodus), Humanity was in the middle of taking its first steps towards colonizing the Solar System. Having banded together in the semi-effecient United Earth government, colonies were already beginning to form on Mars, thus reducing the over-populated mother planet's burden significantly. Technology was in its prime, and psychic powers, long thought legend, were beginning to surface.
Then the Star-born hulk appeared. A massive ship, it appeared suddenly in Earth orbit with no warning. The entire population panicked and mobilized military from around the globe to deal with a potential alien threat.
However, no threat came. And, curiousity making the better of them, a team of soliders and scientists investigated the Chicago-sized spaceship.
What they found were bodies. Inhuman bodies, the details of which are still classified. The scientists studied the dead aliens, and then proceeded to drain their computer dry of information.
They decoded this data ten years later, around the same time they finished mapping the genetic codes of the aliens. According to the data, the ship had arrived there via a massive teleportation malfunction, which had also killed everyone on board. Earth was so far from the desired location that it was doubtful that the aliens, who had been dubbed the "Star-born", would ever find the vessel.
More startling was the fact that these aliens could alter fundamental, yet invisible, energies in the universe by will alone, able to perform nigh-impossible feats that re-wrote many of the rules of the cosmos.
After much deliberation, the scientists sighed, shook their heads, and said that, yes, they could, in fact, do Magic.
Reverse engineering magic would take another fifty years. Scientists eventually found out that magic was something that happened on a cellular level, and found a way to isolate the protein strains that were needed and adapted them for human use.
The first experiments ended in either massive physical deformation, insanity, or both. It would take a century before the process became stable enough for more common use.
The year is 199 AE. Magic users, known as casters, demi-humans, or magi, are heavily regulated by the government and are created typically in labs. Humanity has grown to the moons of Jupiter, and is prospering like never before with the help of magic, psychics, and borrowed alien technology (though scientists are hesitant to attempt teleportation for some reason).
However, where there is prosperity, there will surely be those wishing to prey on that plenty...
