The moment Andromeda walked into the med-bay, Cassi whirled from where she sat in one of the chairs, her expression brightening to the intensity of the sun.
"Andi!"
The sixteen year old launched herself across the room, her arms throwing around Andromeda's middle. The dark-haired woman hugged her back just as fiercely, choked with emotion for several minutes as she let the relief flood through her. They were okay, back on the ship. Everything would be okay now.
Her own emotional state nonwithstanding.
Ignoring that for now, Andromeda gently forced Cassiopeia to lift away. She stared down at her sister's face, her expression tightening with anger and worry at the damage she could still see. The skin around Cassi's eyes was heavily bruised a dull, ugly purple from the trauma she'd endured, blue and red burst blood vessels stretching outward like a macabre spider-web. The whites of her eyes had only just begun to return to normal, still reddened and pink.
Cassi winced a little at her sister's faintly horrified expression. "It looks worse than it feels, Andi, I promise," she heaved.
"It looks awful," was her pained assessment, to which Cassi winced and groaned.
"Gee, thanks, like I didn't have enough of a complex about looking like a raccoon already."
Andromeda just laughed at that, hugging her again. "You're sure you're alright?"
"Yep," Cassi chirruped, sounding as light-hearted as ever. "Now that you're back, and the Captain adopted me." Cassi suddenly flinched. "You . . . you're okay with that, right?"
Andromeda squeezed her tighter. "More than okay. The Captain told me all about it on the way back to the ship. If neither of us has to ever see those horrible people that spawned us, we can count ourselves very lucky indeed."
Cassi nodded her head empathetically to agree. A moment later she was skipping out of the room, off to go find mischief no doubt. Dane came in shortly after, needing to have his shoulder looked at. Cassiopeia had done an admirable job of removing the bullet at least, and giving him some basic care. Andromeda finished the work, sending the weapon's specialist on his way with a few pain meds an an order to rest, which she knew would be largely ignored.
An hour or so later Andromeda was busying herself with her normal routine when it suddenly hit her. She dropped her data pad to the floor as her whole body started to shake. All the shock and trauma she'd buried so deeply from everything that had happened over the past few weeks suddenly slammed up to the surface, all at once. All the fear that she'd refused to show, all the pain that she'd refused to acknowledge, the heartache from her parents' betrayal, her pained confusion as to the direction her fickle heart wanted to travel . . . .
Andromeda's slender frame was wracked with sobs and she slowly sank to her knees in the middle of the med-bay, her arms wrapping around her middle in a futile effort to try and keep herself from shattering under the strain.
